The Multi-Sensory Lessons Begin
Step 1: Auditory Skills

The multi-sensory process begins here with auditory skills.

  • Students listen to the sound,
  • watch the shape of your mouth as you say the sound, and
  • feel the air and the vibrations of their throats as they repeat the sound after you.

If some students have difficulty hearing or distinguishing the difference between two similar sounds, ask them to watch you closely and then to imitate the formation and sound step-by-step.

The next auditory activity:

  • Help students think of words with the new sound occurring anywhere within the word.
  • Have students discriminate between a word that has the targeted sound and a word that does not contain the sound.  Specific directions are given in the Ready Reading Teacher’s Manual for each letter sound .

Example: Ask your students to listen to the sound of Ee (as in egg or elephant).

Notice that their teeth are slightly apart with their tongues resting as they voice the sound.

  • Have the students say the beginning of the words “egg” and “elephant” so they can hear the correct sound.

Be careful that they do not say the long Aa sound or the short Ii sound.

  • Help the students think of words which have the short sound of Ee such as egg, leg, beg, pet, enter, eskimo, envelope, etc.
  • Write and illustrate some of these words.

The next part of the multi-sensory process will emphasize Visual Skills.
